Whiteman Park is home to three museums and a true mecca for transport enthusiasts.

If you love history, transport, and hands-on heritage experiences, a museum-focused day at Whiteman Park is one of the best ways to explore what the park has to offer. With three major museum attractions, plus heritage vehicles to ride all located within Whiteman Park, with the Motor Museum of Western Australia as the standout finale.

Whiteman Park is open daily from 8.30am to 6.00pm, which gives visitors plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed. Most of the venue attractions open at 10.00am, so the best approach is to arrive early, enjoy the park surroundings, and then move through each of the museums at a leisurely pace.

1-Day Whiteman Park Museum Itinerary

9:00am: Arrive at Whiteman Park Village

Start the day in Whiteman Park Village, where you can get your bearings, speak to the lovely volunteers at the Whiteman Park Visitor Information Centre (open from 10am), grab a coffee from the Village Café, and ease into the day before the museum visits begin. Beginning early also gives you time to enjoy the atmosphere of the park itself, rather than rushing straight from one attraction to the next.

The Village is also a practical starting point because it places you close to key attractions, transport options, and visitor amenities including the Whiteman Park Visitor Centre. This makes it especially useful for families, older visitors, or anyone who wants a more comfortable day out.

10.00am: Start at Revolutions Transport Museum

Begin your museum trail at Revolutions Transport Museum. The museum is the storytelling hub of the park and helps explain Whiteman Park’s transport heritage.

Revolutions Museum offers a rich look at Western Australia’s transport history, with displays that trace the development of land transport across the state. It brings together a wide range of vehicles, objects, and stories that help visitors understand how people moved, worked, and travelled over time.

The museum is closely tied to Whiteman Park’s own history and heritage, including the story of Lew Whiteman and the land that became the park. This gives the visit an added sense of place, making it more than just a collection of exhibits.

Visitors can explore the museum at a relaxed pace and discover the detail behind the displays, from early transport to more familiar vehicles from later decades. It is a strong stop for anyone who enjoys heritage, classic transport, or learning how everyday life has changed over the years.

11.30am: Browse Whiteman Village and ride the electric heritage tram

After your first museum visit, slow the pace and enjoy a relaxed break in Whiteman Village. This is the perfect time to browse the print shop, pick up a unique gift, or stop at the Lolly Stop for something sweet and nostalgic. With its old-world charm and easy going atmosphere, the Village adds a lovely sense of variety to the day and gives visitors a chance to pause before heading on to the next museum.

You may also want to stop in at the Whiteman Park Visitor Information Centre. Here you can chat with one of the volunteers, find out what’s happening in the park, plus find out when the tram will be stopping next out the front of the building. The Whiteman Park heritage tram service runs on selected days, including Tuesdays, Fridays, weekends, school holidays, and public holidays.

12.15pm: Lunch in the park

Pause for lunch in the park and use one of the many picnic areas available. Choose to either bring your own or stop in at the Village Café Whiteman Park where you can dine in or why not get take-away. You have plenty of options to sit and enjoy the scenery. Bring a picnic blanket for plenty of green space options or you could nab yourself a spot under a gazebo.

Got kids with you? There is plenty of space for the kids to run around, or choose from one of the many playgrounds located near the village centre.

1.15pm: Visit the Tractor Museum of WA

In the afternoon, head to the Tractor Museum of WA. The museum complements the rest of the Whiteman Park experience beautifully, with displays that connect transport, farming, industry, and innovation into one engaging heritage story.

The museum’s collection includes nearly forty tractors, stationary engines, vintage trucks, country life artefacts, and historic photographs, There is plenty to discover. It is also one of the best places in Whiteman Park to get a feel for how agricultural life shaped the state and how machinery supported that growth over time.

If your visit falls on the second Sunday of the month, make time for the monthly Tractor Parade, which departs from the museum at 1.15pm. This is the highlight day of the month, when restored vintage tractors fire up and travel through the Village, creating a lively and memorable experience that adds extra character to the visit. A perfect location to watch the parade is out the front of the Motor Museum of Western Australia as you see the tractors return back to the Tractor Museum of WA.

Tractor Museum of WA is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10.00am – 4.00pm.

2.00pm: Finish your day at the Motor Museum of Western Australia

Save for the final major stop in your Whiteman Park itinerary. The museum is open daily from 10.00am to 4.00pm, giving visitors plenty of time to explore at an easy pace.

The museum is especially family-friendly, with interactive activities that help children engage with the vehicle displays. Families can pick up an activity booklet on arrival, explore displays designed to spark curiosity, and enjoy hands-on moments such as sitting in a car or scooter, watching a 1929 Buick being started by a volunteer, and seeing how a cut-away engine works.

It is also home to Daniel Ricciardo’s 2014 Red Bull RB10 Formula One car, which is the only permanent Formula One car on display in Australia. This makes it a standout attraction for motorsport fans as well as a memorable highlight for visitors who want to see one of the museum’s most prized exhibits.

Spread across two large halls, the museum’s collection includes more than 200 vehicles, with 140 cars and 70 motorcycles, plus more than 15,000 scale models, so there is plenty to see even on a short visit. Your visit will include viewing rare vehicles, racing history, and motoring memorabilia.

The Motor Museum of Western Australia is open every day from 10.00am to 4.00pm
General admission is $17.50 for adults, $13.50 for seniors, $8.00 for children aged 7 to 16, and $40.00 for a family of two adults and two children, with RAC discounts available on some ticket types.

Bus Preservation Society of WA – Heritage buses and the Whiteman Explorer

The Bus Preservation Society of WA is based at Whiteman Park and preserves Western Australia’s bus heritage through restoration, workshop activity, and heritage vehicles. Visitors can use their services while at the park, including the Whiteman Explorer vintage guided bus tour, which runs on Mondays at 11.00am and 1.00pm.

If you are planning a visit on a Monday, this is a great way to see more of the park without doing all the walking yourself.

Perth Electric Tramway Society – Heritage tram experience

The Perth Electric Tramway Society restores and operates heritage electric trams from its workshops in Whiteman Park, and it offers one of the park’s most iconic visitor experiences. The trams run between the Village Centre and the Mussel Pool Picnic Area, with stops including the Whiteman Park Train Station, Pia’s Place, and Village Junction Station.

This is a live service that visitors can use during their visit, and it is one of the best ways to experience the park’s transport heritage in motion. The service operates on a regular timetable, with trams generally running every 45 minutes, and more frequently on some special event days and public holidays.

Bennett Brook Railway – Vintage steam train

Visitors can ride the railway on operating days, with services running on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and some weekdays during school holidays, making it a strong add-on for a park visit.

Please note, steam services are restricted to the winter months from roughly mid-May to mid-September, and operations may pause on higher fire danger days or during fire-related bans. The railway also offers a scenic bushland experience that suits families, train lovers, and visitors who want something a little different from the park’s road-based heritage attractions.

Best days to visit

The best day to visit will depend on the overall experience that you want.

To visit all three museums, your best bet is to visit Wednesday – Sunday. If however you would like to couple your visit with a ride on a heritage bus to explore Whiteman Park, then you should visit Whiteman Park on a Monday. If you want to ride on a tram, you will need to visit on an alternative day.

Public holidays and school holidays are rich with experiences with most venues and activities open in the park.

How to get to Whiteman Park

Whiteman Park is located only 25 minutes from the Perth CBD. There are plenty of options to arrive into the park including catching the train. Once you arrive at the Whiteman Park train station, there is an easy 2km stroll into the Village Centre, or check the Whiteman Park website for connecting transport options to get you inside the park, including a bus shuttle service or the heritage electric tram. Please note, these services are not run by the Motor Museum of Western Australia, and it is best to check their respective websites for correct days and times of operation.

If choosing to drive, there is plenty of free parking available on site. The most centrally located car parks are carpark 7 or carpark 9.
