The 1966 Mini 1275 Cooper S is a true icon of motoring history and is now available to view for a limited time at the Motor Museum of Western Australia.
This small but mighty car is celebrated for its racing pedigree, technical innovation, and vibrant legacy in both motorsport and pop culture. Plus, visitors to the Motor Museum of Western Australia can also enjoy a whimsical detail: a mini scale-model Mini Cooper is on display inside the car itself.

The Mini 1275 Cooper S – A Motoring Legend

Launched in the mid-1960s, the Mini Cooper S 1275 was developed as the most powerful variant of the original Mini lineup. It featured a 1275cc engine crafted for under-1300cc racing classes, delivering up to 76 horsepower—a notable output for such a compact car.
Known for its sharp handling, front-wheel drive, and space efficiency, the Cooper S redefined sporty small cars.

Racing Pedigree

The 1966 Mini 1275 Cooper S made motorsport history with remarkable victories, including the legendary 1966 Bathurst Gallaher 500. Rauno Aaltonen and Bob Holden took first place by a full lap, with Mini Cooper S cars securing the top nine finishing spots. You can read more about this achievement in the Shannons Club article on the 1966 Bathurst race.
Internationally, the Cooper S claimed Monte Carlo Rally wins in the 1960s, clinching British and European rally championships that earned the car its “giant killer” status.
Pop Culture Star

Beyond the racetrack, the Mini Cooper S became a cultural icon. Its most famous film appearance was in the 1969 caper movie The Italian Job, where its agility made it the perfect getaway car. The Mini also featured in the Pink Panther film A Shot in the Dark, cementing its place in cinematic history.
