Motoring Legends of Western Australian Motoring

Motor Museum of Western Australia unveiled a striking new large-scale mural in April 2025, paying tribute to the pioneers and icons who shaped the state’s automotive history. Created by renowned Perth artist Shakey in collaboration with ArtByDestroy, and supported by RAC (WA), the artwork immortalises key figures whose contributions span over a century of innovation, adventure, and community service and features nine instrumental Western Australia motoring figures.

RAC (WA)

Ernest Hackfath

RAC Patrolman No. 4, symbolising roadside resilience. Hackfath traversed Western Australia in his Reo Junior truck, rescuing stranded drivers and pioneering road safety signage on behalf of RAC (WA) during the early years.

Maurice Brockwell

A champion of Western Australia’s motoring heritage, Brockwell along with a band of dedicated volunteers played a crucial role in establishing the Motor Museum of Western Australia at Whiteman Park, which remains a vital institution for preserving our state’s automotive history. His legacy is honoured in the museum’s Brockwell Hall.

Daniel Ricciardo

Eight-time F1 Grand Prix champion, Perth-born Ricciardo is depicted mid – “shoey” symbolising Western Australia’s new generation of motorsports excellence. His 2014 Red Bull RB10 is on display at the museum.

Ross Dunkerton

Five-time Australian rally champion and advocate for WA’s inclusion in the World Rally Championship, Dunkerton was awarded an OAM in 2018.

Marion Bell

Percy Markham

One of Australia’s foremost antique car collectors in the 60’s, Percy Markham built a lasting legacy in the Western Australian motoring community.

His personal collection of 43 cars was once considered the most robust antique collection in Australia, before it was dispersed to various auctioneers and institutions over the decades. Several cars from the original Markham Collection make up the backbone of the Motor Museum of Western Australian collection today.

Why the Mural was Created

Over the past 5 years, Motor Museum of Western Australia has been allocating bare wall space to create lasting memories of key motoring moments.
In collaboration with RAC (WA), Motor Museum of Western Australia engaged with Shakey to provide storytelling of our connection to key legends and pioneers of motoring from Western Australia. An extension of the RAC Motoring Hall of Fame, key motoring sports personnel were selected based upon their historical connection to motoring, pioneering in their field and their connection to Motor Museum of Western Australia.

Making of the Mural

Using over 60 cans of spray paint, the mural was completed over 2 weeks by Shakey and ArtByDestroy.

They lived on site inside a caravan during the painting of the mural which allowed them to work outside the regular opening hours of Whiteman Park. During this 2-week period, where they endured a severe thunderstorm (with hail) and a heatwave!

The side of Motor Museum of Western Australia is corrugated tin, and this added to the complexity of the project and those artists who could finish such a job in realistic state. Shakey noted there were “more corrugations [than] the Gibb River Road.”
